Las Abuelas: Latina Grandmothers Explain the World and Other Stories is the culminating presentation in a five-month series of community events sponsored by the California Council for the Humanities and presented by the San Diego Public Library. The Abuelas Project is an oral history multimedia project in which six women from San Diego's neighborhoods discuss the role of religion, faith, and location in the lives of their families and communities. Filmmaker Marina Shoupe created a documentary film from interviews, stills, and family archives. The film screens publicly on January 21, 2005. [more]

During the summer of 2004 I watched the interviews, and met the Abuelas in order to make portraits for use with the film and community presentation of their stories. The women were generous, creative, and inspiring in the honesty of their faiths. The images were made in the women's homes, churches, or both. [view portraits]
